Social marketing is an often misunderstood form of marketing that is reaping huge rewards for website owners who use it. Most webmasters who understand it, even while being very new to social marketing, are seeing results like:
1. Higher search engine rankings for their top keywords
2. More rankings of additional keywords or “long tail” keyword phrases
3. More link popularity from sites linking on their own accord
4. More link popularity from social media sites
5. More activity on their blogs, such as more commenting and interaction
6. Direct traffic from incoming links on social media sites (One good StumbleUpon.com submission can net thousands of visitors alone.)
7. Fast traffic increases and steady growth in unique visitors month after month
8. An increase in subscribers and sales. Social traffic, properly acquired, is very warm to your message and products.
The problem for most people when thinking about social marketing, after getting a taste of all the hundreds of sites there are to interact with, is becoming overwhelmed and paralyzed into inaction.
They assume established social marketers gained their “social authority” in a short period of time. This is simply not true. Although the opportunities for driving serious traffic and rankings from hundreds of social sites exists, it is an embarrassment of riches.
And it cannot be conquered over night. It is a gradual process you manage with all your other responsibilities and grow as time allows.
What I encourage my clients to do is set aside enough time each day to get one more link, participate in one more conversation, or sign up for one more account on a social site.
A little goes a long way and social marketing is not an “all or nothing” situation. After some time you will become established on the social sites you need to have a presence on. And you will have a schedule that allows you to keep up with your other work while adding this extremely powerful marketing method to the mix.
10 Steps For Starting a Social Marketing Campaign
1. Schedule a bit of time each day to do some new things. Don’t just say you are going to do them. Write the time into your day and follow through.
2. Sign up for the major social news sites: Digg.com, Propeller.com, Mixx.com. Fill out your profile page completely and hold back on submitting your own stuff until you’ve really done a good job submitting, voting, and commenting on stories not directly related to your site.
In fact, BE a real presence and don’t try to push your own content onto the networks you belong to. It should feel and be natural and you will know what “natural is on each network by participating, commenting, voting and getting a general sense of what members think is good and bad content. Watch their comments and votes and you will know how to proceed with your own site’s content from there.
3. If you don’t have a blog, you must install one immediately. This is not an option. It is an absolute necessity on today’s web. Our company uses Wordpress and recommends it over any other blogging platform, and it can be installed easily by you or your webmaster. Wordpress download: http://wordpress.org/download/
Option #2: Check with your web host to see if they have Fantastico available to you and, if so, that it installs the latest version of Wordpress. If so you are very lucky because the software can be installed by you very easily in just a few steps with Fantastico.
4. Once you have your blog set up, join the following networks. (These are blog communities that will help you generate visitors, authority, and links and most bloggers belong to them.) MyBlogLog.com (install the widget on your Wordpress blog), and BlogCatalog.com. (they also have a widget to install)
5. Join groups, interact with other publishers, and make friends with the easy networking tools these sites provide. Especially the people who would be most likely to link to your blog and send you traffic who write about similar things or have an audience similar to yours who’d benefit by knowing you. You can even start your own group, promote it in the network, and send “shouts” to the group when you have announcements or need attention to a new post.
6. As soon as you establish yourself on the sites mentioned above, move on to other sites like them that might be more targeted directly to your niche and the market you work in. There are a lot of new “vertical” social sites popping up that focus on much more narrow markets and their membership is far warmer to your kind of information than on the bigger, more general networks above.
Add a new site to the mix as often as you can and repeat the steps for becoming established there as mentioned in Step 2 above.
7. Join a group dedicated to social marketing to pick up tips from other social marketers and find new places you can sign up with to continue building your social authority. New sites pop up every single day. Follow places like Go2Web20.net to find new opportunities to connect with your market.
8. Remote blog. Join blogger.com and put content there that is good, just not good enough to go on your main blog. This serves two purposes: 1) you get to use more of the great content you find as you travel through all the social news sites and 2) it gives you another place to link back to your main site and pass on traffic and link popularity over time.
9. Track your progress diligently. If something you are trying on a social network isn’t working, you need to know that in order to save time and move on to something more fruitful. MyBlogLog.com (above) has a tracking system which will show you where your traffic is coming from so you can avoid time wasting efforts and focus more on the sites that are really pulling in good traffic for you.
10. Don’t freak out! This is only overwhelming if you act like someone at an all-you-can-eat buffet with no self control. You have other things to do and this needs to fit into, not dominate, your current business and marketing.
Social marketing can partially or completely replace other methods you are using to promote your site including paid advertising. Many people completely drop their paid advertising or PPC campaigns once they see the organic, natural traffic and search engine rankings pile up from social marketing.
Until then, just take it one step at a time and do some social marketing. A little goes a long way and before you know it, you will reach a point where a lot of traffic and lots of search engine rankings are piling up because you simply started doing something each day.
There’s a lot you can learn about social marketing. And not all of it can be found on free blogs.

When article directories became the rage a few years ago, now with hundreds, even thousands of them all over the web, syndication became a serious business.
Once we had several hundred sites to submit to we were more then eager to find solutions for syndication that didn’t require us to submit articles by hand to each article directory.
And the solutions came screaming at us. Now it is unheard of to submit your articles by hand to all the important directories. Services abound to help you with article syndication today.
Enter Web 2.0. Video is all the rage, YouTube.com sells for a billion and change, and video search engines are popping up everywhere.
Everyone wants to be next. And they are throwing free video sharing and streaming at their visitors to attract a following.
Video is coming into its own now and people are marketing their sites by providing content in video, but not nearly as much as content is still provided via the written word.
Here is where it gets exciting. The cost of entry into the video production and syndication world, financially and learning curve-wise, is always going to be a bit higher than article creation and syndication.
Everyone and their sister can sit down and bang out an article like this one. Everyone has access to and knows how to use word processing programs.
Video is a whole different beast. You have to know how to shoot it, how to do screen captures (for how-to videos), how to produce a video that looks and sounds good, and how to get that video into the growing list of places that organize that medium exclusively.
Frankly, people will always be scared of the jump between article marketing and video marketing. This leaves a much smaller number of people competing in video search engines for eyeballs than there are now in article directories.
I see a massive upsurge coming in 2007 in the number of people creating and sharing how-to videos and viral videos to promote their sites, but nothing like the article marketing explosion in the last few years.
It’s that barrier of technology and a higher learning curve that will keep the weekend promoters at bay for a good while, until video production and marketing is as common as article marketing. (If that day ever comes.)
My tip for 2007
Get into video. Learn about how to produce it and syndicate it. Find out what’s going on at YouTube.com and how people are generating massive video subscriber lists and traffic back to their main sites with video.
It will take some surfing, some thinking, and some creativity, and that is exactly why you want to know everything you can about video marketing.
Because most people simply will not take the time to learn about video marketing until those of us who are doing it now are so entrenched, it won’t matter!

More and more web site owners are taking advantage of the exponential growth in video sharing sites and syndicating video for link popularity and direct traffic.
There are now at least 50 very solid video sharing sites with high traffic numbers and rankings across all the major search engines. Many more video sites are online and ramping up to be players as well.
As I predicted when YouTube took off, video sites are fast replacing article directories as the “darlings” of syndication for link building and targeted traffic generation.
Video is becoming ridiculously easy to create these days and even rank amateurs have a plethora of tools that make video production a snap for them. The main problem is video is very big and takes a long time to upload to all the video sharing sites.
It’s not at all like articles where you can easily syndicate across a huge base of article directories in a snap with the right article syndication service.
Or is it?
New services are coming online to take advantage of the great demand marketers have for easy video syndication. Of course this is a natural development now that there are enough sites to drive video marketers crazy and make them seek out syndication services that will help them spread their videos without uploading them one site at a time.
The original video syndication service, Traffic Geyser, is quite a bit more expensive than article syndication services. But then, they have to deal with a huge bandwidth bill each month from uploading hundreds or even thousands of videos across all the main video sharing sites.
There are free video uploading services, but they are very light in the number of video sites they upload to.
As demand for easy video syndication continues to rise, watch for more and more competitors to come online and take their spot in the video syndication industry.
If you were around when article marketing took off, you know what’s about to happen in the video marketing industry. It’s going to be an even greater explosion than article marketing was when it hits critical mass.
The smart marketers are making how-to videos and re-purposing their written content into video scripts as fast as they can to get ahead of the video marketing boom that is just beginning to really take off across the web.
First movers always get the best results, but video marketing is just starting to show massive promise and there’s still time to get ahead of the masses before everyone is marketing with video.

This is such an exciting time on the web for people creating magnetic sites filled with content their niche is after.
I just don’t understand why so many people are fighting it tooth and nail.
From arguments that never end about the “birth of this” and the “death of that” to arguments over the monikers of change like “social networking” and “web 2.0.”
My thing, since the beginning, has been “Who cares what people are calling everything on the new web, let’s just acknowledge the obvious: this is a new web we are dealing with!”
Smart people are staying out of the fights over semantics and taking in all the new possibilities offered to them for marketing their sites.
For instance, the fact that SEO is easier than it ever has been in the past should be the Number 1 topic of discussion and jubilation on the web.
Finally people with more ideas for great sites, products, and services than technical experience can simply publish great content and do extremely basic SEO and rank high in the engines.
Even over the geeks who invented the complex, technical SEO of yesterday.
No longer do we have to trick engines. We simply give them what they want and they actually reward us for it.
The critics (always people who make money from SEO services) say that it takes months to take a content site to the top of a niche.
That is complete spin to keep us sucking on the teat of SEO firms who have everything to loose in Web 2.0.
The way I build sites gets me into the top ten just as fast or faster than the SEO of yesterday. And I stay there as long as I want. And the geeks cannot push me out (Give it a shot pocket protector man!) because I am not even playing their game, and they don’t understand mine!
The only people on the net who badmouth social marketing, content development for the sake of visitors instead of search engines, and “post and rank” technology are SEO firms and individuals who make money by keeping search engine optimization confusing.
Enough is enough!
If you want out of the SEO game, embrace and enjoy the new web and all it has to offer.
Go long tail for keywords and leave the one and two word phrases to people who want to be #1 for the most generic term in their niche.
You can enjoy hyper-targeted traffic while they get their bandwidth chewed up by tire kickers and lost surfers.
Get into social bookmarking, link sharing, sticky content development, and link bait (another word everyone argues about which simply means “attractive content” that gets linked to).
Get into custom RSS feeds and autodiscovery. Get a blog and be part of the discussion in your niche that will go on with or without you.
The people taking advantage of interactive media are raking in traffic, rankings, and profits for their sites.
The people arguing the semantics and whether there really is anything all that special going on are woefully out of touch.
The fact that they cannot accept the writing on the wall and don’t know there is indeed a monstrously sweeping change taking place on the web is proof they are lost at sea.
Don’t listen to the naysayers. Take advantage of the interactive web marketing that is available in your niche and create something powerful, special, unique, and profitable!
